Joey Purp: iiiDrops

Chicago’s Joey Purp raps about molly, money, weed, interracial misogyny, urban violence, and dead friends skillfully, with gusto, and at times believably, over a completely adequate collection of bombastic soul-inspired beats reminiscent of Supreme Clientele-era Ghostface. But throw in a track “in the style of Future”, and another “in the style of Drake”, a few too many lackluster hooks repeated ad nauseum and dressed up with autotune, and you’ve got yourself  one solidly above average, if nondescript and mysteriously unengaging, mixtape.
